Mouth Ulcers

Causes - The most common cause of mouth ulcers is trauma from inadvertent bits, nurns or toothbrushing.

Some individuals suffer from recurrent oral ulceration (aphthous) and occasionally multiple ulcers can be caused by the Herpes virus.

•  Use a soft toothbrush when brushing your teeth.

•  Avoid hard, sharp, spicy and acidic foods and drinks until the ulcer heals – stick to soft foods that are easier to chew.

•  Avoid things that you think may be triggering your ulcers, such as specific foods. Read about the causes of mouth ulcers for more information about potential triggers.

• Reduce your stress levels by doing an activity that you find relaxing, such as yoga, meditation or exercise. Read more about relaxation tips to avoid stress.

Ulcers usually heal within a week. If they persist more more than 4 weeks you should consult your dentist

Oral infections

oral infection

Oral thrush is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth.

Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. The lesions can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them. Sometimes oral thrush may spread to the roof of your mouth, your gums, your tonsils or the back of your throat.

Although oral thrush can affect anyone, it's more likely to occur in babies and in people who wear dentures, use inhaled corticosteroids or have compromised immune systems. Oral thrush is a minor problem if you're healthy, but if you have a weakened immune system, symptoms of oral thrush may be more severe and difficult to control.

Consult your dentist as soon as possible

Inflamed, Bleeding Gums

Bleeding from the gums on brushing or eating is an indication that they are inflamed. This is caused by inadequate removal of bacterial plaque by toothbrushing

In many instances, swollen and bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease

In the quest to keep teeth clean, you might be tempted to brush teeth as vigorously as you can. Gums are made of delicate tissue, though, so brushing the wrong way could damage them.

Whether you opt for a manual or electric toothbrush, choose one with soft nylon bristles that have blunted ends

At the first sign of bleeding or enlamed gums you should contact your dentist
